If you remember, last week I ended last week's preaching reminding everyone of who we were. As we saw in the bible we: “are chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God,” being all of these things is a great privilege, but there is something else that we are. As Christians, we are not only His representatives, we are also His army. We have been chosen to defend and expand God’s kingdom here on earth. But in order to do this there is a certain quality that we must possess.
This will be the main point of our Bible study today. To serve the Lord appropriately we need to be courageous and brave. One of the biggest truths about the Christian walk is that it is not for the fainthearted, or the weak; the Christian walk is not for the cowards. To be a genuine Christian you have to be brave.
I say that we have to be brave because as we all know, the more faithful we are to God, and the more we attempt to lead a holy life, the more we will be attacked by the powers of darkness. Powers that only seek to separate us from the path that God has chosen for us. The problem is that if we are not brave, if we lack the courage to persevere, then when the battles present themselves we will more than likely retreat from the battle field and will cede territory to the enemy.
This is why today I want us to examine this part of our Christian life that is so important. Today I want us to examine our courage. We need to do this because it is quite easy to say that we are brave or courageous, it is easy to brag about how strong we are, but when the battles present themselves, do we stand and fight? Let’s now turn to the bible verses that we will be using today.
I want to start today’s message with a warning; the message that I bring today is not for the faint hearted. In other words, it is a message that some of you may consider a bit harsh. I say that it is a harsh message because today we will be analyzing our role as Christians. Now, before we proceed to the scriptures in the bible that we will be using today, I want to ask a question. I am not asking anyone to answer me out loud; rather it is a question that will make us reflect about our life.
Have you ever heard a preacging or a sermon that has displeased you? Let’s reflect in our past and search our present, has that ever happened? I ask this question because there are numerous people that upon hearing a strong message, or should I say, a message that does not concur with their way of thinking or being, the first thing they do is get upset or mad, and they never bother to look beyond the message that they have received.
In other words, they allow the impulses of the flesh to lead them to a state of rebellion and disobedience. However, there is a question that we should all ask ourselves upon hearing a sermon, preaching or bible study that does not concur with our way of thinking, there is a question that we must ask ourselves upon hearing a message that perhaps upsets us, and this question is: Why does God allow this to happen? Let’s now turn to our bible to find our answer.
As I have repeated in numerous sermons, things in the world continue to get worse. How many saw what happened in Boston? According to recent news, on April 15, 2013, there were two explosions at the finish line of the Boston Marathon. The euphoria of crossing the finish line became a bloody mess when two explosions rocked the final run of 26.2 miles. The explosions have left more than 175 wounded and three dead, including an eight-year old [1]. As God's people, I ask you to include a prayer during your prayer time for the families of those that perished, and for all whom were affected by this violent and ruthless act, begging the Father to ease the sorrow of those who have lost a loved one, and to guide all who have in any way suffered into His presence.
Up until the day that I started writing this Bible study, no one has claimed responsibility for the explosions. In other words, no individual or group has claimed responsibility for this terrorist act, and the authorities have not divulged that they have a suspect in mind. But every Christian in the world knows who was responsible for this act. We all know the name of the person responsible for this, and all terrorist attacks happening around the world. His name is Satan.
After seeing this event happen, and continuously watching the news about what happened, I don’t know if you thought the same thing as me. The more I hear about the terrorist act, the more I wonder: how many were really ready to go with the Lord? I ask this question because no one could imagine that in an event so popular and familiar, something like this could happen. But the reality is that this type of incident can happen anywhere at any time. It does not have to be a great event with hundreds or thousands of spectators, this type of delete bloody violence that robs and/or shatters the lives of innocent people, can occur in the most peaceful city or town in the world. And recently we are seeing them happen more often here in the United States.
And that is why I wonder how many are really ready to go with the Lord? So today I want to focus our Bible study on this topic. I wish to focus my preaching today on this issue because the truth is that there are many Christians who think they are ready, but that in fact are not [2]. Today I want us to reflect on our life and ask ourselves, and answer it honestly: Am I ready to go right now? This is a question that we must constantly ask ourselves, because the reality is that our physical life is very fragile; our physical life is really nothing [3]. However, the life that Christ offers us after death is eternal. And we are the ones responsible for choosing where to spend eternity, remember that God is not going to force you, but the devil will tempt you. Let's now open our Bible to begin today’s preaching.
